It is at stream crossings that the road changes briefly from asphalt to concrete. This abrupt change in road material is to preserve the pavement. If the effluent passing from south to north flowed over asphalt the asphalt would quickly dissolve. Concrete survives.

These stream crossings are — oddly enough — posted with “No Swimming” signs which are only offered in Spanish. The good news is that just about the only “surfers” ever found anyplace along here were gang members, water logged, and very, very dead.
